Storytelling is a language art. Something clicks in the child’s mind that now it is safe to play act. In an environment that is non-judgmental and fun, students will begin to trust their instincts through the use of theater games, improvisations, storytelling, and
dance movements. Their creative imaginations flourish as their bodies and voices become more effective communication tools. Students and teachers will learn to make any story come alive; folktale, fairy tale, or
personal. Alina can also direct and any scripted play. All culminating in a performance at the end of the workshop.
As a native Spanish speaker, Alina is able to teach bilingually. She has a professional background for 30 years as a dancer and actress. But her proudest achievement is her company “Kids Acting Out-west”, bringing performing arts to after-school curriculum, summer theater camps, and classrooms.
Dancing is a celebration of life! You hear the music, you begin to move, and then you smile. The uplifting beat of Latin music gets everyone moving. Alina makes salsa easy and fun to learn. The students will experience culture, social skills, fitness, community and team work in this great art form. Alina’s specialty is teaching Cuban salsa in a circle, Rueda de Casino. This traditional dance is similar to square dancing, where you change partners depending on the “caller.” We will have the students dance the salsa in a Rueda (wheel), allowing them to move around the circle while the dance moves are announced in Spanish. At the end of the workshops, a showcase of the dances can be culminated for the school and/or parents. In 2007, Alina created the 1st annual Jr. Salsa Competition in Oxnard schools and hopes to continue the event every year.
